“As humans we have a natural need to reach out and open - and that requires us to be vulnerable, to open our heart” As we grow from infant to adulthood, we develop ways to protect ourselves against our inevitable negative experiences. The protection we take on manifests long term as chronic tension, which can end up creating chronic pains, intractable body symptoms, or fragile emotional health. When we release the chronic tensions held within our nervous system, , we release long trapped fear that has been unconsciously feeding us with a negative self-image. The release of these unconsciously held tensions and emotions leaves us feeling rejuvenated and alive, in touch, once again, with our innermost loving, radiant, joyful self. It allows us to rebuild a positive self-image for ourselves. It can restore our physical and mental health. BBTRS© is a new and powerful approach to releasing stress and trauma held both physical and mental levels. Its origins are in Wilhelm Reich’s body oriented approach to therapy, Alexander Lowen’s Bioenergetics work and the work of Somatic therapist Peter Levine , author of “Waking the Tiger”. Bioenergetics, on which much of this work is based, says that what is going on in your mind affects your body and also vice versa. It is based on the observation that the unconscious postures we take up to handle both the physical and emotional pain and stress of our lives inhibits our ability to fully express who we really are. These characteristic postures create stiffness and distortion of the free movement of the body that results is known in bioenergetics as “armouring”. This armouring is a two way process. Fear and anxiety create postural tension. Once created, the tension creates a vicious circle that generates even more feelings of anxiety and stress, and so aggravating the original state. All this is happening wholly or largely outside our awareness. BBSTRS works to release this tension in within the body. This creates a pathway for the life energy, generated within the pelvic region, to move freely throughout the body. This process is known as “dearmouring” There are three approaches used to dissolving body armouring: 1. Deep breathing to build up energy (aliveness) in the body. 2. Direct manipulation chronically tense muscles to loosen them 3. Talking openly and honestly about the resistances or emotional restrictions that arise. Mark Sutton is teaching at the festival. His work has many parallels to tantric practices and complements tantric teachings admirably. For more about BBTRS or Mark’s work visit www.markdsutton.com
